Q - What have you been up to recently?
UPDATED July 27, 2005

A - My new album Ghetto Redemption was just released on Tuesday July 26, 2005. Since the completion of the album I have been working non-stop on promotions for it. Three singles were released to radio, and I am heading into tour season. A release party is in the planning for early fall, as I am booked up for the summer.

Q - Who are some of your inspirations? Any CD's or albums you listen to on a regular basis?

A - I love all styles of reggae and listen to pretty much every reggae artist there is, but some favorites and major influences are T.O.K., Degree, Tony Rebel, Jr. Kelly, Beres Hammond, Prodigal Son and of course the King Bob Marley. Besides Reggae I also love 50's and 60's Doo-wop, jazz and I am a total Latin Head as well - I really dig WAR, Santana and Malo.

Q - Being a white Canadian, how did you get into Reggae music?

A - I believe that the rhythm of Reggae music is a thing that you must be born with! Everyone that I have tried to teach Reggae to has not been able to quite get the hang of it. It’s so different from the things we are used to in Canada or America, that most people can’t train themselves to do it. I know that God had planned my ministry before my existence, so He created me liking Reggae. Now, of course I still had to learn what it was. As I look back through out my life I realize now that all the songs I ever loved growing up were either Reggae or had a similar “flow” to Reggae. When I first realized that this music I loved was called “Reggae” was in 1993. The Inner Circle song “Sweat (A la la la la long)” was very popular at this time and was always on the radio. I fell in love with that song and bought the album. Realizing this music was called Reggae I bought some more, and more, and more, and more and…. Really it was all part of God’s wonderful plan for my life.

Q - How did you learn to speak Jamaican Patois?

A - Because of my God given passion for the country of Jamaica, I literally showered myself with everything Jamaican. I studied Jamaica whenever I could, often using it as the center of my school projects, as well as collecting and listening to Reggae music in my spare time. In my research I often came across Patois dictionaries that were written to help tourist when they travel to Jamaica. I would try to memorize these dictionaries, and then listen for things in Reggae to hear it in context. However, it is impossible for these books to be complete and I often had to (and still do) figure some things out on my own by listening over and over, and how it is used in different context. Due to my youth, the accent was not difficult to adopt because I hadn’t been firmly grounded in my Canadian accent to the point of no turning back yet. I still learn new things everyday and still continue to study and try to get my hands on anything new.

Q - Why do you use the Name Jah?

A - The name “Jah” rightfully belongs to God. The Hebrew name for God, YHWH, is translated in the KJV in Psalm 68:4 as “Jah”. “Sing unto God, sing praises to His name: extol Him that rideth upon the heavens by His name JAH, and rejoice before Him.” Other versions translate the Hebrew as “LORD”. Jah is a contraction of the name Jehovah or Yahweh, meaning “I AM” - the name by which God referred to Himself. The name Jah is found in many biblical names, such as Elijah (meaning “Lord God”), Abijah (meaning “Father God”) and Jahzeel (meaning “Allotted by God”). In all cases Jah means “God”. In light of my relationship with Christ, I am God’s child or “Jah Pickney”. This name for God has been misused by lost men. It is my purpose to reveal the true “JAH” - the Lord God Almighty, Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the Great “I AM”, to the lost of this world. When witnessing to the lost at Athens, the Apostle Paul found a point of contact with the people. In Acts 17:16-34 he reveals to the men of Athens that the “Unknown God” they were worshipping was in fact the Lord God Almighty. When we witness to Jews, we direct them to the “messiah”. In reaching lost Jamaicans for Christ, it makes sense that we use the familiar name “Jah” to redirect them to the true owner of the name.

Q - Why do you wear Dreadlocks, speak patois, and use the colours Red, Yellow (Gold), and Green?

A - Sacrificing my own interests and preferences I have chosen to identify with the ones I hope to reach, without compromising the Gospel message or Christian principles. These “outward” associations with the people that God has called me to, have opened many doors for me to share my faith in Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul said in 1 Cor. 9:20 “To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews…to the weak I became weak…I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.” I have stepped into the Jamaican culture in hopes of reaching some for Jesus.

Q - Is this method of ministry successful?

A - In my weakness He is strong. God graciously chose to use me to lead International Recording Artist Stitchie to Christ. Through a Bible that I gave to Stitchie at Sumfest ’97, Stitchie gave his heart and life to Christ. In Stitchie’s testimony, what made the event significant was that a tiny white youth with dreadlocks made his way through the crowd of reporters, spoke to him in patois and then handed him a bible. Because of the peculiarity of that scene, Stitchie viewed the action as a sign from God. He went back to his hotel and read that Bible and gave his life to God. God has a different method and ministry for each one of us. He only asks us to be faithful to what He has called us to do for Him. The results are in God’s hands.
